Man killed in shooting near Rockford liquor store identified

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Officials are releasing the name of the man killed in a shooting Friday near a liquor store on Rockford’s west side.

Randy Johnson, 30, was one of two men shot at MaxMart, 922 Kilburn Avenue, around 10 p.m. on Sept. 28, according to the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office.

Murphy Doss, 51, of Rockford, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon in connection with the crime.

According to Rockford police, witnesses reported that a group of people were arguing and Doss allegedly shot Johnson and a 34-year-old man. Doss reportedly drove away after the shooting.

Johnson and the other shooting victim were taken to area hospitals, but Johnson died from his injuries.

Investigators reported finding the suspect vehicle in Belvidere Oasis with a gun and ammunition inside. Doss was arrested and taken to the Winnebago County Jail.
