Newington police arrest teens after a car accident and attempted carjacking

NEWINGTON – Two teenagers were arrested Sunday evening after they allegedly pushed a stolen vehicle into a building and attempted carjacking in a nearby town, authorities said.

The Newington Police Department responded to reports of a motor vehicle accident around 5:21 p.m. near Carr Avenue and John Street, where they found an unoccupied stolen vehicle forced through a fence and into a commercial building.

The suspects, who were teenagers, fled the scene on foot.

During the initial investigation, a Newington officer was approached by an individual who claimed two youths on a scooter had just attempted to carjack him in New Britain.

The victim alerted him to the suspects who were still nearby.

Officers were able to locate and arrest the suspected juveniles without incident.

One was charged with interfering with an officer, participating in a police chase and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

The other teenager was also accused of interfering with an officer.

Both were released to their legal guardians following the arraignment.

The Newington Police Department continues to investigate the first car accident.

The attempted carjacking incident has been referred to the New Britain Police Department for further investigation.
