Driver sues company after being fired because of his hairstyle

A truck driver is suing his former employer after the employer fired him for refusing to wear a “buzz cut” hairstyle.

Drew Harvey, 26, was fired in June after working as a flatbed truck driver for TMC Transportation in Des Moines, Iowa, for just a month. He filed a civil rights complaint against the company in July. On September 26, Harvey filed a lawsuit against the company, claiming he was told his long hair was a “safety issue” even though other employees were allowed to wear their hair long.

According to the Des Moines Register, the lawsuit alleges that other employees were allowed to wear long hair and were even featured on the company’s social media. Harvey’s attorney, Ben Lynch, has helped other black men with similar allegations against TMC.

Harvey claims that his hair has spiritual and emotional significance to him and that he hasn’t cut it since his father’s death four years ago.

TMC did not respond to Harvey’s civil rights claim, which is why it is pursuing the lawsuit. The lawsuit accuses TMC of racial discrimination and seeks unspecified damages.
