Monday Morning Uni Watch 2024: Week Four

Good Monday morning, Uni Watchers. I hope everyone had a nice weekend. Welcome to the fourth week of your Monday morning uni watch.

Week 4 of the 2024 NFL season saw a surprising number of pretty to very good looking plays, which is always a nice bonus. Only three teams wore alternates (Cowboys on Thursday, Browns and of course the Falcons), although the Lions will wear their blue and black jerseys for the first time tonight. Since you all know my feelings about same colored pants/socks, I won’t talk about it once this week – you can all see the photos. This no longer needs to be continued.

I’m always amazed at how good the Falcons look when they wear their 1966 throwbacks.

I know many of you like this look, but is there a team whose throwbacks these are? The much better than their regular uniforms? We joke every time we see them that “they should make these permanent,” but there is more than a hint of truth in that statement. All we need is for Art Blank to pull the trigger. Seriously…how good do these look?

While the bad news is that these probably won’t become the Falcons’ primary jerseys anytime soon, the good news is that we’ll see them at least twice more this season. Once this week, when the Falcons are on TNF against the Bucs, and then again in Week 16, against the Giants. I’d rather watch it eight or nine times a season, but for now I’ll settle for three times.

And now to the rest of your university watch on Monday morning.

Thursday Night Football: Cowboys vs. Giants

The week started on Thursday night with a game where the Cowboys wore theirs Icy white pure white variety. If it seems like teams are inclined to wear alternate jerseys during nationally televised games, perhaps they shouldn’t. I don’t particularly like the all-white cowboys, but I would prefer that either their helmet had a gray center stripe or their pants didn’t; It looks a bit strange that the helmet and pants stripes are different. The gray center stripe is the only gray on the uniform.

__________
Games on Sunday: Panthers vs. Bengals

While the Panthers wore white at home (their best look in my opinion), the visiting Bengals opted for orange/black/black/orange, which was close to a Spy vs. Spy game, but a lot of color for both teams offered. The game had a chance of being a varsity disaster, but things actually looked pretty good on the field.

__________
Broncos vs. Jets

On a foggy, rainy afternoon in the Meadowlands, the Jets wore their new Sack Exchange home jerseys. I’ve mentioned before that while I love the Jets’ metallic green helmets, they often don’t match the green of the uniforms due to the lighting. But in cloudy/rainy conditions they actually matched up pretty well. The Broncos countered with their own new blue/white/white/white uniforms. After wearing their white jerseys with white shorts the first week and their blue shorts the second week, I was hoping they would break out the orange shorts yesterday. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until these make their regular season debut.

__________
Jaguars vs. Texans

It didn’t look great, but the Texans went with their best look in blue/blue/white/blue (although many Texans wore white tights). I’m sure some of you were hoping the Jags would wear teal pants, but unfortunately they paired their black helmets and white jersey with black pants and socks. Even though the Texans’ helmet/jersey is navy blue, the navy blue looks almost black on the field, so the game was almost a black/white vs. white/black game.

__________
Rams vs Bears

This game looked pretty good, although I wish the Rams hadn’t worn blue pants. The Bears looked great and I appreciate that they are one of the few teams wearing striped socks. I’m glad they have a pretty consistent look there. Now we just need to work on the open undershirts.

__________
Vikings vs. Packers

Very good looking game yesterday at Lambeau, with the pack in their always beautiful classic home kits. The Vikes countered with their purple pants and socks. Minnesota showed they meant business, posting a 4-0 record this season.

__________
Saints vs. Hawks

Oh, what could have been. The Falcons showcased their great throwbacks that we all know should be a regular home team. All we needed was for the Saints to wear gold pants. Unfortunately, they’re solid white underneath the helmet, which seems to be their preferred street look these days. Although they wore gold pants in all three preseason games, they have yet to wear them in the regular season. They were mono-black in their first three games and mono-white yesterday. Maybe they’ll wear gold pants next week in MNF against the Chiefs after yesterday’s loss. But I wouldn’t hold my breath.

__________
Buccaneers vs. Eagles

There was another good looking game in Tampa yesterday with the Buccaneers playing at home with their tin/white/tin combination. The Eagles countered with their midnight green hats and shirts, all white below the waist. I think white socks are now a staple for the Eagles when they wear green jerseys or pants. They have worn exclusively white socks/tights with green this season, after doing so a lot last year.

__________
Steelers vs. Colts

One of the most beautiful games of the day took place in Indianapolis, where the Indianapolis Colts performed with an old-school look in their beautiful royal blue jerseys. The Steelers’ road look is one of the most underrated combinations, with the black/white/gold away look unique to the NFL.

__________
Patriots vs. 49ers

I hope every week that the Patriots surprise us and break out the silver-grey pants with their road jerseys, but so far they’ve always worn white over blue since they got those varsities a few years ago. It doesn’t look bad, but I’d like to see them try the silver gray pants at least once.

__________
Commanders versus cardinals

Almost any Cardinals home game is likely to look brutal, and yesterday was no exception. But it’s difficult to find a good chromatic match when you have burgundy and red – the shades are just too close together to differentiate them enough, but different enough to notice the difference. Bonus points for Washington because everyone there wears white socks.

__________
Raiders vs. Browns

Interestingly, the Browns wore their 1946 fauxbacks yesterday, but on the road. It’s not the first time they’ve done this, but usually teams keep their alternate jerseys for home games. Dallas and Cleveland both wore their all-white jerseys as away teams this week. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, and it was another aesthetically pleasing duel this weekend.

__________
Chiefs vs Chargers

We close out the afternoon games with another outstanding matchup between two old AFC West foes. LA wore his Sunday best while KC always looks good in white jerseys and red pants. Simply outstanding.

__________
Sunday Night Football: Bills vs. Ravens

We end our Sunday games with the Ravens playing the Bills in mono black. There aren’t many teams that do well in all-black, and few do it as well as the Ravens. The Bills countered by switching white/white/blue/blue. I’d really rather pair them with either white pants or white socks (but not both), but their half white/half blue look isn’t all that bad.

And there you have it. Overall, a really decent set of games! And tonight there are two Monday evening games again. In one game, the Lions will wear their new blue and black jerseys (against Seattle in all white below the neck), while the second game between the Titans and Dolphins may look pretty good.

What did you think of yesterday’s games? Are you looking forward to (or dreading) the Lions/Seahawks matchup tonight?

MMUW Five and One

The Five and One (5 & 1) is simple: the five best matchups and one bad one. There were also some very good looking games this week – but only one can be the best, and we had surprisingly few games that looked bad. I’ll keep the comment short and let the photos speak for themselves.

Feel free to disagree in the comments below. Starting with the fifth-best matchup, moving on to the best – and then to the turd in the proverbial punch bowl – here we go…

__________

#5

Low key, one of yesterday’s better matchups.

__________

#4

The *very* rare case of a white jersey and shorts versus black jersey and shorts match showing the good side of 5 & 1.

__________

#3

To use Jimmer Vilk’s terminology, that was what was so special about your color palette!

__________

#2

In many if not most weeks this would be your #1. The fact that it isn’t is a testament to how good your #1 is…

__________

#1

Simply. The. Preferably.

__________

& 1

I guess I could have put the Cardinals here (again), but this mostly black vs. very dark blue will do. Barely.

Guess the game based on the scoreboard

Guess the game…

…From the scoreboard

Today’s scoreboard comes from Billy Hampton.

The premise of the game (GTGFTS) is simple: I post a scoreboard and you simply identify the game pictured. In the past, I don’t know if I did that always completely amazed you (some are easier than others).

Here is the scoreboard. Try to identify the game (date and location and final result) in the comments below. If anything notable happened during the game, please add it (and if you were at the game, bonus points for you!):

Please continue to send these in! Feel free to send me any scoreboard photos (with replies please) and I will keep them running.

Guess the game by the uniform

Based on a suggestion from a long-time reader/contributor Jimmy CorcoranWe’ve introduced a new “game” on Uni Watch that’s similar to the popular “Guess the Game from the Scoreboard” (GTGFTS), except this game asks readers to identify the game by the uniforms worn by the teams.

As with GTGFTS, readers are asked to guess the date, location and final result of the game based on the clues provided in the photo. Sometimes the game should relatively easy to detect, while in other cases it can be quite difficult. It will normally be a visual cue (something strange or unique about one or both uniforms) that allows clear identification of one and only one game. In other cases, there might be something significant about the game in question, such as the last time a particular uniform was ever worn (one of Jimmy’s original suggestions). It’s up to YOU to find out the game and date.

Today’s GTGFTU comes from Brock Halsey.

Good luck and please post your guess/answer in the comments below.
