Coach Mourinho is facing backlash after joking about a violent attack on a former Fenerbahce player

After Fenerbahce’s 2-0 win over Antalyaspor in week seven of the Super Lig, coach Mourinho dealt with questions about more than just the game.

During the post-match press conference, Mourinho was asked about the recent shooting of former Fenerbahce player Serhat Akin, who was injured in the violent attack.

Mourinho’s reaction, particularly his comment: “The shooter must not have been very good”, has led to significant backlash, particularly from Fenerbahce supporters.

Mourinho makes controversial comment about Serhat Akin shooting

Serhat Akin, a former Fenerbahce player and football commentator, was shot in the leg as he left a sports broadcast in Istanbul last week.

Akin was shot just moments after analyzing the team’s UEFA Europa League match against Union Saint-Gilloise during a post-match press conference. His injury was not life-threatening and authorities quickly arrested the suspects involved.

During the press conference, Mourinho admitted he had not heard about the attack. “I didn’t know anything about it,” Mourinho said, adding: “I hope he’s okay.” When Mourinho learned that Akin’s condition had stabilized, he made the joke that has caused controversy ever since: “The shooter doesn’t have to have been particularly good.”

Although Mourinho meant the remark as a joke, it sparked criticism, particularly from those who considered it inappropriate given the seriousness of the incident.

Public reactions to coach Mourinho’s comments about Serhat Akin’s shot

Many expressed disappointment at Mourinho’s comment. Fans, particularly those with close ties to Fenerbahce, felt the remark softened the severity of the attack. Akin remains a prominent figure for Fenerbahce fans, having played over 150 games for the club. His connection to the club made Mourinho’s joke seem out of place for many fans.

Social media quickly became a platform for Fenerbahce fans to express their displeasure. Mourinho’s statement was widely shared, with some describing it as inappropriate for someone in his position.

Akin’s outspoken career as a football commentator, particularly his criticism of specific teams and players, was noted in discussions surrounding the shooting. While there has been speculation that the attack may be related to his recent comments, officials have not confirmed a direct connection.

The investigation into the shooting of Serhat Akin continues, suspects arrested

The investigation into the shooting of Serhat Akin is ongoing. Police arrested all five suspects involved in the attack, including the gunman identified as OD and his accomplices. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed the arrests and praised the police forces’ quick response.

“All suspects have been arrested and we will ensure that justice is served,” Yerlikaya said. “We will not allow such incidents to go unpunished.”

While the motive for the attack remains under investigation, there is speculation that Akin’s recent comments about Fenerbahce’s performances may have played a role. However, no official conclusions have been made yet and authorities are still gathering information.
