Mikel Arteta has revealed Arsenal’s summer signing Riccardo Calafiori was “a bit emotional” after suffering an injury scare in the 4-2 win over Leicester City.

Calafiori, who moved to Arsenal from Bologna in a £42million deal in the summer, received his second Premier League appearance on Saturday when he visited newly promoted Leicester.

The Italian defender played every minute at the Emirates Stadium but looked uncomfortable as Arsenal celebrated their second goal and then landed awkwardly after scoring a header late on.

Calafiori was seen clutching his left knee and then wearing a knee brace as he left the stadium after the 4-2 win, which was sealed by two injury-time goals.

According to foreign media reports, Calafiori was even in tears as he feared the worst after suffering a serious injury to the same knee in 2016 that sidelined him for almost a year.

Asked whether Calafiori and Ben White are fit for Arsenal’s Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night, Arteta said: “Those are the two players who are in contention.”

“We have to check them today. We didn’t do any training yesterday. Obviously he was a bit emotional after the game and let’s see how he feels today.’

Asked what has impressed him about Calafiori since his move to north London in the summer, Arteta added: “How willing he is.”

“The moment I spoke to him he made it clear he wanted to come here. He felt like he would fit in here perfectly, and that was true.

“He always has a smile on his face, he’s likeable.” He’s also a fighter who will do everything he can for the team. He has all these qualities.’
