HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Law enforcement and family members have identified a teenager who was shot Friday night while driving to pick up his girlfriend.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the fatal shooting occurred Friday night around 8 p.m. in the 23600 block of the Katy Freeway on the westbound service road near the Grand Parkway.

Family members say 19-year-old Cody Johnson was on his way to Katy to pick up his girlfriend when he was shot.

Officers responded to the scene and found Johnson outside his parked car, unresponsive and suffering from gunshot wounds. He was flown by helicopter to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Johnson’s family said he lives in Missouri City and graduated from Ridge Point High School in the spring. He was scheduled to start his new job on Tuesday. He also had a black 2011 Camaro with gold rims that he loved.

“Cody loved life. He was an athlete,” said his mother, Amy Juneau. “He was a doer. He was always trying to make people laugh.”

“He would make you laugh through your pages. He challenged you in ways you never thought you would be challenged,” said Mike Johnson, Cody’s father.

One of his greatest passions were motorcycles and cars.

“That’s an understatement. Yes yes. Cody has had a passion for cars and vehicles since he was a child,” Juneau said.

He was excited to start his new job on Tuesday and talked to his parents about it on Friday.

“In fact, he said it was one of his best days. He was so happy,” Mike Johnson said.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting may have resulted from a road rage incident. Investigators do not have a description of the shooter, but are asking anyone with information to come forward.

“We need answers. He was one of the lights of the world that you don’t often see. The world has lost an incredible, incredible child,” said Mike Johnson.

“I only ask you as his mother, justice for my baby is easy, everyone knows something. He was the best kid,” Juneau said.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in this case.
