Ponniyin Selvan-1, the first part of the duology directed by filmmaker Mani Ratnam, is two years old since its release. Ponniyin Selvan won a major award at the 70th National Film Awards

At this year’s 70th National Film Awards announced in August, Ponniyin Selvan won major awards in several categories. It won in categories like Best Film, Best Composer for AR Rahman and Best Cinematographer for Ravi Varman.

With the support of Lyca Productions, the music was composed by AR Rahman. The historical drama traces the lives of the rulers of the Chola dynasty and the drama that unfolded between different rulers. The largely fictionalized film was inspired by writer Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan and some real-life characters.

The film was praised for its aesthetically pleasing performances by the main cast and for its narrative. Although the film was criticized for altering parts of the original story, it was well received by audiences and critics.
