Witness wants answers after fatal shooting at North Austin HEB

FOX 7 Austin is learning more about the deadly shooting that occurred Friday at the HEB at Parmer Lane and Canyon Ridge Drive.

An eyewitness now wants to share what he saw and express concern about what happened. However, he asked that his name be omitted.

“I have lived in this community for almost 17 years and this has never happened,” the witness said. “I go to this HEB two to three times a week.”

Now he finds it difficult to even leave his house.

“I’m still shaken,” he said. “I’m not quite sure when exactly I’ll be able to do that… I wanted to go to my gym, I wanted to do my regular Sunday visit to the Goodwill, and I don’t even want to be out and about a lot.” Less on this road. I don’t want to see this parking lot.

He was standing at the self-service checkout at HEB on Friday afternoon. Little did he know that police were already on their way to a burglary scenario that would end in death.

“What we heard was about six or seven shots,” he said. “It wasn’t a single shot, it was multiple shots, and that’s about four o’clock. The supermarket was full… an HEB employee says: ‘Don’t worry, it’s over. That was the security guard who fired after being assaulted or assaulted.’ It’s over, it’s over.’”

He then pulled out his camera to record what appeared to be a security guard standing next to a man on the ground.

Austin police did not confirm whether it was the security guard who fired the shots.

“Then he kind of leaned over and handcuffed him, I think,” he said. “Then he stood up, then he put his foot on his chest, and then he stood there and then basically let his foot go.”

Police said the man who was shot died in the hospital several hours later.

“I keep thinking that the person who was there, who I was there, who I was watching, was experiencing his final moments,” he said.

48 hours after all of this, he still had so many questions.

“How much de-escalation has taken place?” he said. “Who was he?” What are they guarding? What is a gun for?”

He believes these answers will help this community move forward.

“In the interest of everyone, there must be full transparency in the interest of everyone involved.”

FOX 7 Austin reached out to Austin Police and HEB again Sunday for more information but has not yet received a response.

At Friday’s news conference, police said they planned to release more information; However, you still have to mention the name of the deceased person. After the shooting, officers detained one person for questioning.
