Steelers show color in failed comeback attempt against Colts

Midway through the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Week 4 game against the Indianapolis Colts, the question arose: Can Pittsburgh come from behind and win when they trail Indianapolis by 14 points at the end of the first half? Because the Steelers were playing with a lead in their first three games, they weren’t yet in a situation that would have required a comeback, and in the past they’ve been dismal even when they have.

Pittsburgh’s top defense didn’t play like one, and the first half was a scoreless mess on offense. Arthur Smith’s squad isn’t designed to come from behind, but they gathered their strength and made a strong attempt, only to fail with a field goal that would have tied the game.

The defense, which entered Week 4 with a top-notch line, had no answer for the Colts’ offense. There was no answer for Anthony Richardson, who hit three of four on his only pass attempts of the game. The unity Despite it had no answer as Joe Flacco passed for two touchdowns and 168 yards.

Indianapolis didn’t play like a one-win team and was foaming at the mouth about defeating the undefeated Steelers. The Colts’ offensive line kept the Steelers’ line, including TJ Watt, completely under control.

The defense collapsed and Fields almost staged a comeback. But with a broken running back room and little help from his receivers, there was nothing Fields could do to make it work. The Steelers have shown their colors: If the defense can’t contribute, it’s going to be a long game and a longer season.

Next on the Steelers’ schedule is the Cowboys in Dallas for Sunday Night Football.
