Postecoglou provides update on Destiny Udogie after injury scare against Man Utd

Destiny Udogie only lasted 45 minutes in today’s game between Spurs and Manchester United at Old Trafford and appeared to be injured in the first half. Now Ange Postecoglou has provided a fitness update on his full-back.

Udogie could have come out sooner

Overall, it was a great first-half performance from Spurs and Udogie played a big part in it, providing plenty of attacking threat on the left wing.

However, his game could have ended much earlier than half-time as the young Italian spent some time on the ground limping off the pitch with Djed Spence waiting in the wings to replace him.

However, Udogie carried on and almost got on the scoresheet shortly afterwards when he was almost on the end of a ball that whizzed across the penalty area.

The change finally came at half-time as Spence took over at left-back and also put in a great performance. However, due to his substitution, there were concerns about Udogie’s injury status.

It wasn’t worth the risk to keep Udogie going

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou spoke to the press after the game (via Football.London) and discussed Udogie’s condition and said there was no reason to worry.

He said, “Yes, he was fine. I mean, he felt something in his quadriceps, but obviously he finished the half, but we just thought at halftime there was no point, we have to be careful how much we push our players.

“Obviously Destiny had to come on pretty early on Thursday night, which wasn’t the plan, and I would say Micky probably played more than we wanted.

“So we have to be really careful with things like that and Djed did well when he came on so I thought it would be wise to take him off but we’ll see how it goes.”

We need Udogie, but Spence is a capable replacement

Djed Spence continues to prove that he is fully capable of playing at left-back and it is reassuring to know that he can step in and keep the standard in that area high when Udogie needs a break.

However, it’s great news that Udogie seems to be okay as he has so much to offer on this side and we always look like a better team with him in the side.
