Thane, Sep 29 (PTI) The body of Badlapur sexual assault accused Akshay Shinde was buried at a crematorium in Ulhasnagar in Thane district on Sunday, a police official said.

The funeral took place at Shantinagar crematorium around 6 pm amid loud police presence as there were protests at the spot by some residents and associations opposing the move, the official added.

Shinde was shot dead at around 6.15 pm on September 23 at Mumbra Bypass while he was being taken from Taloja Jail to Badlapur in connection with the investigation into a case lodged on his former wife’s complaint.

According to police, he grabbed an API’s pistol and fired, injuring him, after which he was shot dead by an officer leading the escort team.

His body was lying in the Kalwa Civil Hospital mortuary since then. Efforts by police and relatives to find a burial site faced hurdles, including protests from local residents and organizations such as the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and the Shiv Sena.

Shinde was arrested on August 17 for allegedly sexually abusing two minor girls at a school in Badlapur a few days earlier.

In a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, state DGP Rashmi Shukla and Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Milind Bharambe, Anna Shinde also alleged that his son was in a political conspiracy reasons killed.

“My family and I have received threats,” Anna said in his letter, adding that his lawyer Amit Katarnavre and his family had also received threats.

In view of the threats, everyone must be given police protection, Anna Shinde said in the letter.

Meanwhile, BJP MP Kisan Kathore on Friday said Akshay Shinde’s body should not be buried in Badlapur as it would add “stigma” to the city.

“The people of Badlapur are good citizens and do not want this stigma attached to them. Our residents have no intention of allowing his burial here. Whatever happened, it happened, it should not define us,” said Kathore, MLA from Murbad in the district. said a regional news channel.
