The Bengaluru police were left stunned after a 29-year-old woman was found in a hit-and-run robbery spree in Bhoganahalli area of Bengaluru using her ex-boyfriend’s mobile phone allegedly.

Police arrested P. Shruthi (29) and her four associates – Manoj Kumar, Suresh Kumar, Honnappa and Venkatesh – on Saturday for cheating. The woman said she allegedly planned the incident to take possession of her ex-boyfriend’s cellphone, which had private pictures of her on it, as reported by Indian Express.

Initially, the police assumed that it was a robbery that had been triggered by traffic commotion. The miscreants had allegedly targeted Shruthi and her friend after ramming a car into their bike and fled with their mobile phones. However, it later emerged that the woman was the mastermind and had hired four men to rob her ex-boyfriend.

The victim, Dumpa Vamshi Krishna Reddy, had lodged a complaint that some miscreants stole their mobile phones from him and the woman on a two-wheeler on September 20. Reddy said their cellphones were stolen by a group of men following a minor traffic dispute near a store.

“A Swift Dzire car rammed our vehicle from behind and when I questioned them, two men from the car snatched our mobile phones,” the victim said in his complaint to Bellandur police, the national daily reported.

However, the police found that no accident had occurred at the reported location but four men had blocked Reddy and Shruti and claimed that they hit their vehicle and ran away with the phones.

The police then traced the taxi and its driver and later nabbed Manoj, a painter by profession and one of the woman’s employees. He is said to have confessed to stealing the mobile phone along with his associates and shocked the police personnel when he said that Shruti had given him Rs 1.1 million for the task.

Shruti had told the police that she felt insecure after breaking off her relationship with Reddy and fabricated the whole drama because she feared that Reddy would misuse her intimate photos in future. Although Reddy assured the woman that he had deleted the photos, he refused to give her his phone, which aroused her suspicions.

“At this point, Shruti contacted Manoj, who had been working on her house, and bribed him to commit the robbery. When Manoj told her that he needed additional help, she provided him Rs 1.1 million to put together a team,” an official told the national daily.
