Man dead after police shooting in East Mesa

MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — A man is dead after a police officer shot in an east Mesa neighborhood early Sunday morning.

According to Mesa police, the shooting happened around 2 a.m. near 104th Street and Bramble Avenue, north of Broadway Road

According to authorities, an officer attempted to stop a man on a bicycle who was a few blocks south of the neighborhood, closer to Broadway and Cheshire.

However, the official said the man, only identified to be 37 years old, ran into a canal and was later discovered in an empty wash basin. According to police, that’s when the man pulled out a gun and pointed it at an officer when police fired.

Mesa police and firefighters arrived to provide first aid before he was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

No officers were injured and there are no other suspects, police confirmed.

The East Valley Critical Response Team, led by the Chandler Police Department for this investigation, is currently investigating the incident, which is standard protocol for police shootings.

No further information was released.

This is the 42nd officer-involved shooting in the Valley and the 69th in the state in 2024.
