Teenage Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer dies after racing accident in “pouring rain”

A teenage cyclist has died after an accident in “pouring rain”. 18-year-old Swiss rider Muriel Furrer reportedly suffered a “serious head injury” while competing in the UCI Road and Paracycling Road World Championships in Zurich on Thursday. The competition’s umbrella organization, the International Cycling Union (UCI), assumes that Furrer had an accident near Küsnacht on the 74-kilometer route between Uster and Zurich. After Furrer “took a serious fall,” she was flown to a local hospital and admitted in critical condition. She died on Friday. “The investigation into the accident by the relevant authorities is still ongoing,” the UCI said in a statement, adding: “Further explanations will follow at a later date.” At a medal ceremony on Friday, Furrer was remembered with a minute’s silence in her honor. “Our hearts are broken,” Swiss Cycling, the governing body for cycling in the country, said in a statement. “There is no understanding, only pain and sadness.”
