“I don’t understand why we don’t have communication via earphones at World Championships” – Juan Ayuso criticizes the UCI after the tragic death of Muriel Furrer

“I don’t understand why we don’t have communication via earphones at World Championships” – Juan Ayuso criticizes the UCI after the tragic death of Muriel Furrer

If Spain wants to claim the men’s elite road race title at the 2024 World Championships in Zurich, UAE Team Emirates’ Juan Ayuso is likely to play a big role. Before the race, however, the Spaniard took the time to comment on the tragic death of Muriel Furrer in the junior women’s road race earlier this week.

“When I found out, I shed a few tears,” the 22-year-old admits honestly in comments to Cadena SER’s “El Larguero,” with Ayuso recalling another heartbreaking moment in recent cycling history from the 2023 Tour de Suisse “It reminded me of Gino Mäder because he narrowly hit me.” When I won in Switzerland, I only found out about the news later. I remember how bad it was for me because he was a very close person, and now I can imagine what his teammates must be going through.”

We must emphasize that the investigation into Furrer’s death and its cause is ongoing and the exact details of the incident are not yet fully understood. There has been worrying speculation about the circumstances and Ayuso himself has heavily criticized the UCI’s response to the incident.

“It appears that the girl remained without treatment for an hour until medical services arrived. I think it’s a shame and something that shouldn’t happen,” said the Spanish rider, attacking the UCI. He claimed that the lack of team radios was a possible factor in the lack of response to Furrer. “I don’t understand why we don’t have headphone communication at World Cups. Little that can be done can change a person’s life. There are a lot of questions.”

As previously mentioned, the UCI investigation into the death of 18-year-old junior Muriel Furrer is ongoing.
