Three hospitalized after accident Thursday in Sheldon

Sheldon, Iowa – A Terril woman, a Sioux Rapids woman and a Sheldon woman were hospitalized following an accident in Sheldon on Thursday, September 26, 2024.

Sheldon police report that around 2 p.m., 70-year-old Sarah Schnell of Terril was driving a 2014 Dodge minivan westbound on Highway 18, at the corner of the animal hospital and high school in Sheldon. They tell us 70-year-old Mary Ruyter of Sheldon was also traveling west in a 2015 Nissan SUV on the 18th.

The report states that Ruyter was driving behind the Schnell vehicle and Ruyter appeared to have struck Schnell from behind.

SCAT took Schnell, Ruyter and another person, 68-year-old Joyce Johnson of Sioux Rapids, to Sanford Sheldon Hospital.

Schnell’s Dodge minivan sustained $7,500 in damage and Ruyter’s Nissan SUV sustained $7,500 in damage.

Ruyter was charged with failing to stop at a safe distance.
