SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio police K9 is dead and two dogs were shot after an off-duty police officer tried to prevent an attack on his K9 in the city’s northwest.

The incident occurred around 12:45 p.m. near Lands Point Street and Hill Trails Street.

According to San Antonio police, an off-duty officer’s K9 dog was in the backyard when the neighbor’s three dogs broke through the fence and began attacking the K9.

According to police, the off-duty officer and his wife came out to try to separate the dogs. The couple failed to separate them, prompting the off-duty officer to fire several times to stop the attack.

Two of the three neighbors’ dogs were hit by gunfire.

The officer’s K9 was also struck by gunfire. The off-duty officer took his K9 to the emergency room for treatment, where he later died from his injuries, according to SAPD.

Animal Care Services (ACS) was notified and attended the scene. The 46-year-old neighbor was reported by the animal protection authority for numerous violations.

According to the police, the officer with 16 years of service will be transferred to administrative service.

The owners of the three dogs, Roderick and Amanda Harris, told us they heard screaming coming from the backyard and before they could run over to see what was going on and intervene, they heard the shots.

“When I come out I hear them over here yelling like ‘Oh my God, oh my God’ and I’m trying to go through the thing to get my dog, it was too late, there were like three, four shots that I “I know that’s what they told me, my dog ​​ran back into the house, but Dutch died and the other one is in the hospital,” said Roderick and Amanda Harris.

The Harrises tell us that they have only been living in the house for three weeks and are renting the property.

No incidents have been reported so far and they are upset that it ended this way.

“My dogs will play with any dog ​​in the world, they won’t try to kill you, and all my dogs are house dogs, my dogs are not attack dogs, they are not outside dogs, you know what I mean, they are backyard dogs. “Dogs, we walk them around, we take them to the dog park, my dogs are family, they killed my son.”

He tells us they were told to wait for information about a possible court date.
